It’s brutal,

A 20 year old youth, Salim Ilyas alias Aurangzeb, was brutally assaulted by a violent mob and two police men at Nathnagar area of Bhagalpur in Bihar on Monday, 17th August 2007 morning for an alleged attempt of theft. Instead of rescuing the victim from the wrath of the lynch mob, the policemen, ASI Singh and constable Rai, abused him and rained lathis. Ilyas fell unconscious due to the heavy blows from all over. The police then chained his legs to a motorcycle, his hands tied on the back, dragged him along the rough ground until the chain was snapped. The police then bundled him onto a rickshaw and took him to the police station. He is said to be in the jail hospital.
We, the members of JANANEETHI FAMILY, are saddened with shock and shame on the gruesome behaviour of our fellow country men in Bhagalpur who treated a member of their community in a beastly manner. Salim, a rickshaw puller, was the sole bread winner of a large family. Even if he had committed a wrong, he deserved clemency of the society. Instead, the savage and uncultivated nature of humans was manifested on the poor and helpless young man. The people of Bihar who have been tuned to tolerate nasty criminals both in politics and religion could not deal with one among them with kindness.
Bhagalpur incident is more than the brutality of the police. The crux of the problem is deeper and deplorable. It reflects the sanity of our people and public administration.
In deep sense of shame and sadness, WE CONDEMN the act of the mob and the police in this most ferocious act of cruelty. We ardently call for introspection by the civil society and political leadership into the ethical foundations our perception of wrong doers in petty crimes.
