Stop civilian disaster in Sri Lanka

We, the Members of Jananeethi Extended Family are appalled at the killing of hundreds of civilians in Sri Lanka over the weekend. Thousands of Sri Lankans have already died in the past several months due to the conflict, and more still remain in grave danger. As last weekend’s carnage testifies, every minute counts for the estimated 50,000 civilians still trapped inside the shrinking conflict zone and for those 200,000 more who are barely surviving in overcrowded camps.

We appeal to all the parties to the conflict to adhere to their obligations under international humanitarian law and to stop using heavy-calibre weaponry, including mortars, in the areas with high civilian concentrations. We are deeply concerned by the continued use of heavy weapons in this situation. The reckless disrespect shown by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) for the safety of civilians has led to thousands of people remaining trapped in the area. The LTTE must immediately allow the remaining civilians in the conflict zone to leave to safer places.

We honestly believe that there is no evidence in history where violence has been a solution to the problems of community. What the Tamil population in Sri Lanka need is a political solution, not ethnic cleansing by the military. We are also deeply disturbed by the adamant attitude of the Sri Lankan Government not giving heed to the international community.
