At
least 14 people were killed in police firing at Nandigram in east
Midnapore of West Bengal on March
14, 2007 as the administration moved in to take charge of an
area that had virtually been marooned since January
7 2007. But the local sources said that more than 160 are
killed by police. 200 peoples are missing yet. Womens are raped by police
and dead bodies are throne in river. The jounalists have no permission to
visit Nadigam. The
trouble started with the government’s decision to allow the Salim group
of Indonesia to develop a special
economic zone (SEZ) at Nandigram. This would require the
acquisition of over 14,000 acres of land. The special economic zone would
be spread over 29 mouzas (villages) of which 27 are in Nandigram. Most of
the land to be acquired is multi crop and would affect over 40,000 people.
The Salim Group in fact had sought around 35,000 acres of land for a
series of ambitious projects. The
ruling coalition in West Bengal is headed by the Marxist Party that always
claimed to be the promoters of the poor and marginalised in the society.
Bringing land reforms they initiated drastic changes where-ever they were
in power. But that’s all the past. The decline in the party leadership,
both in principle and practicc, reflect in snatching the piece of land
from the poor farmers in order to promote the interests of the MNCs. Jananeethi deplores the brultal assault on and the killings of the poor innocent villagers of Nadigram by the state forces of West Bengal. |
