Jananeethi Report on Pollution of Nitta Gelatin India Limited

KATHIKUDAM to KALAKUDAM

a pipeline distance to disaster

INTRODUCTION

Jananeethi was approached in 1996 by a group of people from Kathikudam complaining against industrial pollution of Kerala Chemicals and Proteins Limited (KCPL was later christened as Nitta Gelatin India Limited - NGIL) and exploring the chances of a Public Interest Litigation.

The matter apparently was serious and calling for urgent legal action. Papers were prepared for a Writ Petition in the High Court of Kerala. However, the de facto petitioners did not turn up thereafter; hence petition was not moved. Later, it was informed that the petitioners were influenced by the polluter company and were given berth in the company.

The problems, however, persisted. Physical survival was not possible due to the vicious circumstances. People everywhere were grumbling. Abject social vulnerability and overwhelming fear of the consequences prevented them from making formal complaints against the company. Finally, an Action Council was formed on 23rd March 2008. The devastating pollution and its vicissitudes ............

WAYANAD SUICIDES

A Psycho-Social Autopsy

INTRODUCTION

“Our common humanity transcends the oceans and all national boundaries. It binds us together in a common cause against tyranny, to act together in defense of our very humanity. Let it never be asked of any one of us – what did we do when we knew that another was oppressed?” Nelson Mandela.

The epidemic of suicides: Suicide is “the conscious act of self induced annihilation best understood as a multidimensional malaise, in a needful individual who defines an issue for which the act is perceived as the best solution”. Suicide is the tragic and untimely loss of human life, all the more devastating and perplexing because it is a conscious volitional act. Death is a tragedy and suicide is the ultimate tragedy. Suicide is the result of a complex interaction of biological, genetic, psychological, social, cultural and environmental factors. Over one million people commit suicide every year the world over. More people are dying by  suicide than in all the armed conflicts around the world. Suicide and attempted suicide carry a huge social and economic cost for the individual, family, friends and society. Hence suicidal behaviour is now considered a major public health problem in all countries.

NAITHIKAYANAM

Journey towards justice

Jananeethi Programmes for the Care and Support

of Tsunami Victims in Kerala, India.

No cause is more worthy than the cause of human survival with sense of dignity and freedom. The post tsunami scenario in coastal areas of Kerala and Tamil Nadu were beyond human comprehension. The Government and the people were left in dismay not knowing how and where to proceed. Scores of humanitarian interventions from all parts of the globe – political, philanthropic, charitable, religious, professional etc – got involved from the beginning to ameliorate human suffering. However, there were also corruptions and manipulations everywhere. As always, the powerful, influential, politically and communally had easy access to justice and much more, but the weak, the vulnerable, the unorganized, the illiterate and other marginalized sections were the actual losers of natural and man-made catastrophes.

This was the context of our intervention in the scene. Our specific areas of intervention were legal aid and assistance, redress of grievances, emotional support, social and psychological rehabilitation and social reconstruction. ……………

CRIME FREE SOCIETY

an experiment in participatory & sustainable development

Report on CRIME-FREE SOCIETY
project in Division XII of Thrissur Corporation,

carried out by JANANEETHI with support of

THE FEDERAL GRANT by the AMERICAN CENTRE, New Delhi

Kerala Model Development – has been a myth, much acclaimed and widely discussed for quite some time, nationally and internationally. The only possible justification for romanticizing such a claim may be the impressions created in the West by the scenic beauty, natural resources, literacy and public health in the State of Kerala. However, the Keralites are well aware that there is only little truth in what has been profusely advertised as “God’s own Country”.

The people of Kerala State, despite their advancement in education and health  care, are far ahead in the case of crimes, in custodial torture and deaths, in road accidents and consequential culpable homicides, in the case of escalating umber of suicides, in the ever increasing instances of sexual atrocities and …………

Jananeethi Report

A STUDY ON DOWRY IN KERALA

Released on 15th January, 2004

Jananeethi explored the practice of dowry and its repercussions in society and families in the State of Kerala. The extent of its prevalence in different populations and religious denominations, the historical, socio-cultural and ethnic factors that accentuated, promoted and perpetuated the practice of dowry and the colossal failure of the Dowry Prevention Act (1961) in curbing the evil practice of dowry, male domination and gender discriminations were some of the explored factors. Suggestions for developing alternatives to counter the problem are also given. ............

VAGAMON "ECO-TERRORISM"

Jananeethi Report

They call it 'eco-tourism'. It may appear more sensible if you name it 'economic tourism'. 'Confuse, if you can not convince' - is the new strategy Indian polity has been experiencing of late. Beginning with the Paradise, mis-representation has been the effective tool used by evil forces for the fall of man and distortion of nature. This strategy was effectively and extensively applied in Kerala state, in the context of the Global Investors' Meet (GIM), the celebrated conglomeration of interests - market, mafia and manipulators. One of the targets in the GIM, being emerged, is the 'dream land' of "God's own country" - the Vagamon Region. This has been very much in public debate in Kerala in recent times. ...............

PLACHIMADA

JANANEETHI REPORT

ON THE AMPLITUDE OF ENVIRONMENTAL AND HUMAN RIGHTS RAMIFICATION

BY THE HCC BPL

At Plachimada, Moolathara village, Chittor taluk, Palakkad Dt.

July 2002

Multinational companies (MNCs) invading developing countries under the pretext of development deviate into devious devises to amass wealth, breaking the above subtle laws of ecology. There is chaos following the greed. The Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages Pvt. Ltd. too followed the same path while taking roots in a hamlet of a developing country, brutally uprooting the agriculture, culture, health and peace, to plunder.......

THICHUR

The First

LITTIGATION-FREE VILLAGE

Jananeethi Report

A “ litigation-free” village was indeed an impossible dream. But the people of Thichur village, a seemingly unknown, sleepy village in Varavoor panchayat of Thrissur District, in Kerala State made it happen on the 7th day of May 2000. The road to success was slow, hard and often frustrating. But at the end, it was a moment of exaltation to cherish and a history to emulate.

(2002)

INTRODUCTION

Bio-medical waste is any waste generated in the process of diagnosis, treatment or immunization of human beings or animals, research activities, production or testing of biologicals. It shall be the duty of the occupier to take all steps to ensure that such waste is handled without any adverse effects on community health and environment. It is estimated that only 6% of the waste stream is infectious that needs to be disinfected. 2% of the hospital waste stream is pathological waste and shall be burned in a crematorium or other incinerator. The rest of the wastes, more than 90%, can be handled in the same way we handle solid wastes - by reducing, re-using, and re-cycling. Waste collection efficiency in Indian cities range from 50% to 90%. ...........
