Mr. P.M.Francis IAS,
the district collector of Thrissur formally opened the Jananeethi
pavilion on Thrissur Pooram exhibition grounds at 6 pm on Monday the
9th April 2012. The members of the Board and Executive
Committee of Jananeethi, top officials of Pooram Exhibition
Committee, representatives of civil society groups, law students of
Thrissur Law College and Jananeeti staff attended the function.
This is the first
time Jananeethi is putting up a stall in connection with the
Thrissur Pooram. The exhibition will be open for 7 weeks, from 1st
April to 21st May and is expected to attract not less
than half a million people across the country. Thrissur Pooram, the
most spectacular and colourful temple festival of South India, will
be celebrated this year on the 1st day of May 2012 with
pomp and glory.
The stall has been
given to Jananeethi by the Pooram Exhibition Committee free of cost
at the intervention of the district collector. Jananeethi is the
service provider of State Social Welfare Board for giving
appropriate services to victims of domestic and gender based
violence; and also protection to children, disabled and old age
people.
Jananeethi was able
to take up the huge task of running a stall from 9 am to 9 pm on
every day involving several volunteers and legal consultants by the
generous support of PTF (Partnership in Transparency Fund,
Washington) at the recommendation of Public Affairs Centre,
Bangalore. This has been done as part of the on-going study under
taken by Jananeethi for fighting corrupt and unethical practices in
clinical drug trials in Kerala.
In the context, the
stall of Jananeethi highlights two major segments of its
multi-faceted programmes – its efforts to save clinical drug trials
ethically sound and corruption-free and legal safeguards and
statutory protections to victims of gender-based and domestic
violence as provided in ‘Protection to Women from Domestic Violence
Act, 2005 and various other statutory provisions in respective
legislations. Posters, banners, cartoons, caricatures etc are
displayed in the stall for the benefit of the visitors. DVDs and
short films are continuously screened on issues relating to
unethical clinical drug trials and the inherent dangers to the life.
Round the clock announcements on the various services rendered at
Jananeethi are being made to the general public through the hired
slot from each hour of the day. In addition to all these, the
services of a lawyer is made available at the stall from 3 to 6 pm
on every day for free consultation on any topic of public interest.
