DR.
SUKUMAR AZHIKODE

JANANEETHI
and JANANEETHI INSTITUTE
Condole
the demise of Dr. Sukumar Azhikode
(1926-2012)
Dr.
Azhikode, a member on the Advisory Council of Jananeethi
from its inception in 1992, has always been great source
of strength and democratic values to all of us. He
graced several occasions of Jananeethi as its chief
guest or guest of honour. His monumental lectures on
Indian Cultural Legacy after the demolition of Babri
Masjid under the banner of PRABHASHANA
SAPTAHAM, organized by Jananeethi at the premises of
Thrissur Public Library, were the best of all times for
relevance, content, craft and public appeal. He has
never turned his back to any request from Jananeethi,
what-so-ever be the topic and context. The legend that
lived among us for more than 85 years inspired tens of
thousands by his gifted tongue and rhetorical elegance.
A great thinker, author, scholar, teacher, literary
critic, social activist, political philosopher, rights
defender and environmental protagonist – Dr. Azhikode
was incarnation of noble thoughts and ethical dogmas.
Dr.Azhikode
will be remembered in Jananeethi for many years to come
with profound gratitude and respects. A true Gandhian, a
great teacher, an arch defender of human freedom and
dignity his absence in the socio-cultural domain of
Kerala will never be filled.

works if we are considering individual rights. In
Koodankulam, Tamil Nadu the lambs are taking on the
wolves, reiterating the fact that the practice of
democracy should be inclusive and respect the primacy of
individual and collective rights, including the right to
protest. The people's protest against the nuclear plant
in Koodankulam is a symbol of resistance over repression
and a fight of morals over profits. However, in the din
of the economic growth frenzy, such expressions are
often relegated to the footnotes of ...............
